Vodafone and Airtel battle for African m-money

Comments "Impressive Roll out program in 9 African countries for Airtel these times. Banks are following them most of the time but with a limited role. They should take it more seriously to avoid being useless for the majority of retail customers"

Extract "While carriers in the west fight for a significant role in the mobile commerce value chain, it's a very different story in Africa, where economic growth and the sizeable base of 'unbanked' users are creating a boom in handset-based payments. Vodafone has been a pioneer with its M-Pesa, which is gradually expanding from its initial territory in Kenya to other parts of Africa and to India. Now Bharti Airtel, India's own leading cellco, and a key Vodafone rival in emerging economies, has partnered with pan-African banking group Ecobank to offer mobile money services across nine countries."

GOOD IDEAS, BAD THINKING

Comments "Everywhere the challenge is to deploy a reliable network serving client as customers. Controls of KYC are needed but they should serve the prupose and not block the service. Here is the story of a good idea turned into a bad service at the end"

Extract "Direct benefit transfers are expected by the United Progressive Alliance to be a game changer. They are expected to largely eliminate leakage and theft of benefits. Identification of residents will be by the Aadhaar number, but there is yet no foolproof, non-discretionary way to identify all beneficiaries. The direct benefit transfer can take place only to identified beneficiaries. However, it will save theft and waste by eliminating the handling and distributing of foodgrains and other subsidized or free goods and services."

Brazil tasks Central Bank with regulating mobile payments

Comments "The regulation will not for interoperability but set it as a goal for later. non bank m-payment entities will also be allowed to issue e-money , as in EU. A good sign for the financial inclusion ?"

Extract "The Brazilian government announced that Banco Central do Brasil will be responsible for regulating the nation's payments industry, including m-payments providers. By setting m-payments regulations in place while that market remains embryonic, the South American nation's stance contrasts with U.S. authorities' wait-and-see approach."
